If your car has body damage, dents, rust, a cracked windshield, or accident or storm damage, you can still donate it in Stockton through Delta Ride Exchange. Cosmetic or structural damage does not disqualify your vehicle. Heritage for the Blind accepts cars in any cosmetic condition, running or not. We arrange free towing, handle the paperwork, and you receive a tax receipt—typically with a minimum value of $500, even if your vehicle is badly damaged.
Here’s how it works in California: your vehicle is picked up anywhere in the Stockton Metro—whether you’re in Brookside, Lincoln Village, Weston Ranch, Morada, or near the University of the Pacific. The car is then sold, sometimes for parts or recycling if the damage is severe. Your tax deduction is based on the actual sale price, not how the car looks or what you paid for it originally. Heavy damage may mean a lower sale price and deduction, but you still receive a written receipt, and in most cases the minimum guaranteed amount is $500. You don’t need to fix anything first, and you pay $0 for towing. Proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) that supports people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged car
Start online or by phone and briefly describe the damage—dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident, or storm damage—and where the car is located in the Stockton Metro. It’s okay if it doesn’t run or has multiple cosmetic issues. We use this information to plan the right type of tow and to make sure the paperwork is smooth for you.
2. Confirm ownership and pickup details
We’ll walk you through what’s needed for a California title, even if you’re not sure where everything is. Then we schedule a free pickup anywhere in or around Stockton—whether you’re in Spanos Park, Park West, Country Club, or Linden Road. You choose a convenient day and time window, and we coordinate directly with the towing company so you don’t have to chase anyone.
3. Free towing from where the car sits
On pickup day, the tow driver meets you at your home, apartment, shop, or storage lot—driveway, street, or backyard—running or not. Body damage, broken glass, or missing panels won’t stop the tow. There’s no towing bill and no surprise fees. You hand over the keys and title (if available), sign a simple release, and the vehicle is on its way in about 20–30 minutes.
4. Vehicle sale and processing for charity
After pickup, your damaged vehicle is sold through our network. If the body damage is heavy, it may go to auction, a dismantler, or recycler. The sale amount—after reasonable processing costs—goes to Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) charity. They use these funds to provide services and support for people who are blind or visually impaired nationwide, including Californians.
5. Receive your tax-deduction receipt
You get a written tax receipt, usually with a minimum value of $500, even for heavily damaged cars. If the sale price is over $500, you receive paperwork that supports a higher deduction and may include IRS Form 1098-C. Keep this with your tax records. If you use a tax preparer, simply hand them the receipt and they can apply the donation correctly.
6. Enjoy a clear driveway and a clear conscience
Your damaged car is gone, your driveway or carport in Stockton is cleared, and you’ve turned a problem vehicle into meaningful support for people who are blind or visually impaired. No repair bills, no selling hassles, no haggling. Just one simple donation that removes an eyesore, may provide you with a tax benefit, and helps a legitimate nonprofit at the same time.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or mismatched California title
Tip: If you don’t have the title, or the name on the title doesn’t match your current name or address, pickup can be delayed while we help you fix it. Gather any DMV paperwork you have before you call. We’ll explain the steps to obtain a duplicate or handle common name-change issues so you can still donate your damaged car legally.
Severely stripped or incomplete vehicles
Tip: Cars with missing major components (engine, transmission, or all wheels) may require special towing or may not qualify in every situation. Be upfront about what’s missing so we can confirm eligibility and avoid a wasted trip. Even if it’s badly damaged or partly stripped, we’ll let you know honestly whether we can still accept it as a donation.
Vehicles blocked in or hard to access
Tip: If the car is behind a locked gate, inside a backyard, or boxed in a narrow alley in Midtown or downtown Stockton, the tow truck might not reach it. Before pickup day, clear a path and make sure anyone with keys or gate codes will be there. The easier it is to reach the car, the faster and smoother the free towing will be.
Unpaid registration or non-op status concerns
Tip: Some donors worry that past-due registration or a non-operational (PNO) status will block donation. That usually isn’t a problem, but be ready with your latest registration notice if you have it. We’ll explain how the transfer works so you’re not stuck paying registration on a damaged car you’re giving away in good faith.
