Do a 15-minute sweep before donation: remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, personal items, and anything valuable. Factory-reset the infotainment system so Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink buttons, saved home address, and navigation history are gone.

Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security items first
Start with anything that opens a door or proves access. Pull the garage-door remote from the visor or console. Remove spare house keys, gate fobs, mailbox keys, office badges, storage-unit keys, and apartment access cards. Check the key ring too. Only the vehicle keys needed to move and tow the donated car should stay with the car.
Stop billing connections
Take the toll transponder off the windshield, plate frame, or glovebox. Then sign in to the toll account and remove this vehicle from the account. Do this even if the transponder is not visible; some accounts bill without the tag. Also pull parking permits, hangtags, commuter passes, and disability placards so future charges or misuse do not follow the vehicle.
Empty glovebox documents
Empty the glovebox and door pockets of paperwork. Remove your insurance card, registration, repair invoices, financing papers, old receipts, medical papers, and anything with an address or account number. If you want service records to help identify the car, keep copies for yourself first. Do not leave checks, claim forms, or any document you would not hand to a stranger.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Move front to back. Look under both front seats, between seat cushions, in seat-back pockets, visors, sunglass holders, cup holders, the center console, door bins, and floor mats. Open the trunk or hatch. Check cargo pockets, emergency kits, tool trays, jack storage, and the spare-tire well. Remove clothing, cash, tools, electronics, medication, and anything sentimental.
Factory-reset stored data
Before the free pickup, wipe stored data from the infotainment system if the car powers on. Delete Bluetooth pairings, saved phones, contacts, navigation history, saved home and work addresses, garage-door buttons, and HomeLink settings. Use the factory-reset option when available. If the screen is dead, remove what you can and note that personal data may remain inaccessible.
Remove optional add-ons
Remove add-ons only if you can do it cleanly. Dash cams, phone mounts, removable stereo faceplates, satellite radios, toll-tag holders, and child seats usually belong with you. Do not strip parts, cut wires, or remove equipment that changes the vehicle from the condition you described. If an upgraded stereo or accessory is staying, clear its data and leave it installed.
Leave required handoff items
Put the vehicle keys and the signed-over title where the pickup driver can receive them with the car. General title rules are simple: the owner named on the title signs the transfer area, and any lien or co-owner issue must be handled correctly. If your title is missing, damaged, or complicated, check the California DMV before pickup day.

This page is only your clean-out sweep before donation. If a rule turns on your exact DMV record, co-owner, lien, or missing-title issue, rely on the California DMV instead of guessing. Common questions
What if I forgot something in the car?
Contact Delta Ride Exchange as soon as you notice. If the vehicle has not left, you may be able to remove the item. After the car is towed, recovery may not be possible. That is why the 15-minute sweep matters, especially for remotes, account devices, medication, cash, and documents.
Should I keep the title and keys until later?
No. The keys and the signed-over title should stay with the car at handoff. Without keys, the vehicle may be harder to move. Without the properly signed title, the donation paperwork can stall. Keep personal papers and copies you need, but leave the transfer items with the vehicle.
Do I need to reset electronics if the car does not start?
Do what the vehicle allows. If the battery is dead or the screen will not power on, remove phones, cords, garage remotes, transponders, and visible storage devices. If the system does power up, use the factory reset and delete pairings, contacts, HomeLink settings, saved addresses, and navigation history.
